Last week a Dutch publication came online: Telers, word niet virusmoe.

The tomatovirus, ToBRFV, is still relevant today. Disinfection is important; we see an increase in area disinfection. Not only in the greenhouse but also in the spaces outside the greenhouse, such as corridors. With a good focus and periodic disinfection we want to achieve a healthy sector.

PotatoEurope Netherlands outdoor exhibition 1-2 September 2021 to be cancelled

PotatoEurope

Due to the current developments in regard to the coronavirus pandemic in the Netherlands and the associated lack of official approval from Dutch authorities to hold the event, PotatoEurope 2021, an outdoor exhibition on 25 hectares, scheduled for 1-2 September 2021 in Flevoland, Netherlands, has been cancelled. The decision to cancel the event, which takes place in the Netherlands every four years, was made following in-depth discussions between the organizer DLG Benelux and exhibitors.

“We very much regret that PotatoEurope Netherlands 2021 cannot take place as planned, despite thorough professional preparation as well as strong support on the part of the industry. In view of the ongoing uncertainty in the Netherlands surrounding the overall situation of the pandemic and the resulting lack of official approval, the required conditions for holding PotatoEurope 2021 have, unfortunately, not been met. As a consequence, we have made the decision, in close coordination with our exhibitors, that PotatoEurope Netherlands will not take place on 1-2 September 2021 as planned,” said Kuno Jacobs, Managing Director, DLG Benelux.

“Last month in June, several positive signals indicated that the situation in the Netherlands seemed to be progressing well, which resulted in the lifting of various restrictions associated with the pandemic. Unfortunately, it did not turn out as hoped,” added Jacobs. Organised by DLG Benelux, PotatoEurope Netherlands was scheduled to take place at the at the location of Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Field crops in Lelystad. Field work constitutes a major part of the outdoor exhibition, which also includes trial plots and outdoor exhibition tents.
The next edition of PotatoEurope will take place on 7 & 8 September 2022 in Bockerode, Germany.

The Engelen brothers go for the best hatching eggs in the world

‘Collaborating with parties that also want to win’
Brothers Jeroen and Twan Engelen operate a poultry rearing farm and a breeding farm in Someren in North Brabant, the Netherlands, and they export hatching eggs. They aim high. “What we do is Formula 1,” says Twan. “We sell the best products in the world and for this we work together with parties who have the same ambitions.”

The history of the family business in Someren (NL) goes back to 1962 and Twan and Jeroen are now the third generation. The company started as breeding farm Engelen under the management of grandfather Toon and grandmother Nel. Their successors Toos and Noud have added rearing farm Engelen to this list.
The brothers have been playing an active role since 2006. First they take over the rearing farm, followed four years later by the breeding farm and another four years later they start Angel Eggs, an exporter of hatching eggs. In the meantime (in 2012) Engelen Energy sees the light of day.
All activities are spread over five different locations in Someren, The Netherlands. “We sell proteins and energy, two things that all people need,” says Twan at the office of Angel Eggs, which annually exports around 160 million hatching eggs. “With our products, we form the basis of healthy food for about ten to twelve million people.”

Sustainable, healthy and high quality
In addition to sustainability and (the best) quality, health is a common thread through the business operations. One of the sustainable developments is the establishment of Engelen Energie, which generates energy for its own use – think of the machinery – and for third parties.
The two other criteria go hand in hand: healthy chicks lead to healthy hens and roosters, and high quality eggs. The selected day-old chicks that are purchased go to their own breeding company after twenty weeks. They then stay there for up to 62 weeks.
Everything enfolds according to the ambitions of the duo, which has ‘the start of a healthy chick’ as pay-off from Angel Eggs for a reason. “In the field of health, we are leading the way in the Netherlands anyway. Because we export our hatching eggs, I have been able to see a lot of the world and therefore also see that it is not or much less well organized in many places. In fact, I dare to call our country a world leader in this specific area.”

Powerfogger
Being a leader is what the brothers also strive for with their companies. “What we do is formula 1. If you participate in that, you want to win,” Twan summarizes their ambitions. “And so we focus on the production of the best hatching eggs in the world.”
To stay ahead, development is crucial. ‘You create your own competition if you stand still,’ says Engelen. “If we continue to evolve, we will continue to lead the way.”
To ensure this, we collaborate with parties that have the same ambitions as the duo. One of those companies is Veugen Technology in Nederweert. “They started as a rearing farm, added company hygiene to it and therefore know what they are talking about.”
There is also sustainability in that area, because the collaboration has been going on since 1990. ‘In that year we bought a Pulsfog from them to be able to disinfect ourselves and for better hygiene. At that time, the company had been active in this industry for about two years. Now we also have a truck disinfection system on our truck through them, a coldfogger to disinfect the hatching eggs, a Turbofogger, Marayama backpack sprayers and several Powerfoggers to disinfect the poultry houses.’
The latest addition is the Powerfogger 60D, which is hard at work at the time of this visit (and therefore cannot be photographed). “We are very satisfied with it. But if it weren’t for that, our collaboration wouldn’t have lasted that long together.”

Knowledge and experience
According to Engelen, sustainable cooperation is also about ‘keeping eachother on our toes. ‘Jeroen and I are very actively looking for suppliers, but we only want suppliers who can add something to the realization of our ambitions and business operations.’
Frans Veugen qualifies as such supplier. ‘Because they also want to lead the way with their products, by providing customization. We share that ambition and therefore we understand each other. This is important.’
However, the brothers are also critical customers, according to Engelen. ‘I dare to look at others, but on the other hand I trust blindly to their expertise in the field of professional hygiene. The exclusivity of their devices makes it difficult to compare. Then it is important that you can rely on each other’s knowledge and skills.’

Publication HortyDaily

Last week, the article below appeared online at www.hortidaily.com/

Crop protection: Soon to start spot fogging

The rise of space treatment through fogging in the battle against diseases and pests is not new. However, what is newsworthy is the preparation for spot fogging, which is in full swing. This spot fogging will be linked to the latest scouting software, and Veugen Technology is heavily involved. Expectations are high.
The first prototype is now ready, and testing will commence soon. To facilitate spot fogging, the Powerfogger has been made self-propelled.

Space treatment versus spraying technique
In the context of increased labor pressure, the fogging technique fits well into the modern agricultural landscape. Often, labor is simply unavailable, and spraying takes more time than fogging.

When growers face the choice between purchasing a fully automatic sprayer, which requires minimal labor, and a Powerfogger, the latter is often chosen for economic reasons. This raises questions about the future of traditional spraying.

Trials have shown that the results with foggers are not inferior to modern spraying techniques. Jos Veugen states, “In fact, they often prove to be more effective. The trials we conducted against whiteflies and mildew, in collaboration with various crop protection product manufacturers, have shown excellent results. Together, we aim to advance growers. The best result is what matters.”

They also discovered that better results are achieved with 30-40 liters of water per hectare instead of 20 liters while keeping the active substance the same.

Veugen’s collaborative efforts with various partners, including the Ctgb and NVWA, highlight their commitment to progress. Recent discussions have focused on the importance of clear and complete labels, as well as the economic challenges of applying for new product approvals. The demand for extensive scientific research, time, and money can deter crop protection product manufacturers from pursuing this process.

Spray license
Jos finds it remarkable that reports from 1991 are still referenced during the renewal of his spray license to support certain statements. He advocates for the use of reports from more recent research. “The technology of 1991 can be considered outdated in 2024, right?” Jos says. “The greenhouse horticulture industry develops quickly. The sector is innovative and has certainly not stood still over the last 20 years. That seems clear to me.”

Powerfogger
Veugen offers three types of Powerfogger: TB10, TB60 Double, and TB100. The most suitable model depends on the size of the greenhouse and the existing ventilation support. Therefore, the choice is customized.

Veugen Technology lands in Turkiye.

Turkish potatoes will be treated with Synofog.
Our collaboration with UPL expands. The Synofog is now present in Turkiye to do sprout control in potato storages. 🥔

On the first day the Ministry of Agriculture performed a series of tests to approve and register the Synofog for the Turkisch market 👌 . The operators received a training at UPL office in Izmir.
On the second day it was time to treat potatoes with biological orange oil to prevent sprouts.

What are your favorite chips? How much potatoes are needed for their chips factory?
Imagine a cathedral full of potatoes. Walking down the aisle with potatoes stored behind massive doors as high as your neck allows you to look upward.
When the door opens, the smell of cool air and fresh potatoes is coming from thousands of tons of potatoes.
Each potato needs the same amount product to prevent sprouting: 1 tiny droplet of orange oil, the size of a sugar grain. With the Synofog we can cover all potatoes nice and even.

Rocket launch in France

This is rocket science on a potato farm.

How do farmers deliver potatoes without sprouts 40 weeks after harvesting, while in your kitchen potatoes sprout within 1 or 2 weeks? With our fogging machines we help farmers to keep potatoes free of sprouts, to avoid weight loss and to avoid waste of food. The fog in the picture is made from orange oil. This biological product keeps potatoes free of sprouts.

For science lovers:
The dropletsize range of the fog is between 1 to 10 micrometer in diameter. 1 potato only needs 8,5 microliter of orange oil to avoid sprouting for a few weeks.
In volume: 8,5 microliter is about the size of 1 sugar grain. This 8,5 microliter is devided in roughly 1 billion dropplets by our fogging machines !

UPL invited us to test the droplet size of our machines in combination with their orange oil product Argos. The measurements have been done by an independent research team of CERTAM.
The first results confirmed what we already measured in our own test facility: Fogging is a very efficient way to help farmers to avoid food waste.
A special thanks to  Marc Bonnet.

Sea Fresh Retail: Emphasis on Hygiene and Sustainability
More certainty, less disinfectant

Those who supply to retail must have their business in excellent order: sustainability certifications, the ability to deliver quickly, and perfect hygiene. Sea Fresh Retail meets all these criteria with flying colours.

In Urk, they prefer to err on the side of caution regarding hygiene. This mindset at Sea Fresh Retail has led to the use of extra amounts of disinfectant. Meindert de Vries, a quality service employee, explains: “Previously, we went through one twenty-liter jerrycan of disinfectant every four weeks, much more than required. This was not only unnecessarily expensive but also left too much residue. Employees sometimes had to deal with white spots on their hands. Not necessarily harmful, but not healthy either. Employee well-being is important here. For instance, we get half of our sports subscription reimbursed. However, safe working conditions on the floor are essential.”

Preventing Recalls
The mantra ‘better too much disinfection than too little’ is understandable. Total disinfection is crucial in fish processing. The risk of listeria contamination may not be high, but if harmful bacteria appear, they multiply quickly, and the potential consequences are severe. At Sea Fresh Retail, much effort goes into maintaining a hygienic environment. Meindert shares, “We supply about twenty-five million packaged fish items annually to retailers in the Netherlands and surrounding countries. With such volumes, you don’t want to risk a recall. Salmon and shrimp are the leaders, but we also process cod, pike-perch, yellowfin tuna, and shellfish. The fish is filleted, portioned, weighed, and packaged here.”

New Requirements
Sea Fresh was founded in 1999 by the Ras brothers. Initially focusing on North Sea fish sales to wholesalers, the retail branch was added in 2010. This expansion was good for business but brought new requirements. Meindert notes, “Retailers set high sustainability standards. Without an ASC or MSC label, fish won’t make it to the shelves. Almost all our fish is certified.” But at Sea Fresh, they believe that certifications alone won’t save the ocean. Hence, the company started a project in the Philippines in 2011 in close cooperation with WWF, training and educating fishermen and producers. The goal was MSC certification for handline-caught yellowfin tuna. The project was successfully completed in 2021.

Proof of Competence
Besides sustainability, there are other challenges in collaborating with retailers, such as controlling the freshness of incoming fish, maintaining proper temperature, and rapid delivery. Fortunately, Sea Fresh Retail passes these tests of competence with ease: the company grows by about ten percent annually. Growth means expansion, literally. Since 2010, the company has been renovated four times, mostly to create more space, though the latest renovation focused on automation and robotization. The disinfection process also needed to be upgraded. Meindert’s manager decided to switch from a manually filled foam machine to a nozzle system from Veugen Technology.

The machine in the attic automatically doses the disinfectant, distributing it through pipes to nozzle devices in six workspaces. Once a week, on Saturday night, these spaces are fogged with a hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant. The machine is connected to the alarm system. “Once we set the alarm, we don’t have to worry about it,” Meindert says. The system works perfectly, with no residue found anywhere. “With Veugen Technology’s Halofog system, we’ve found the ideal balance between disinfection and proper dosing. Now a jerrycan lasts eight to ten weeks, saving at least half.” Has there ever been an issue with disinfection? Meindert recalls a test with dipslides showing results within the margin, but poorer than usual. It turned out the alarm hadn’t been set a few times. “So, the system itself is not at fault.”

photo series: two farms on one property “what you can do yourself makes you less dependent”

Although growing up among chickens and roosters, it wasn’t a done dealfor Jan van Gils that he would take over his parents’ poultry farm.
He chose to study electrical mechanical engineering and then started his own company in it.
From the premisses of his parents’ farm, he has since been running an installation company for barn ventilation and barn lighting for cows (not for poultry). Besides his knowledge of poultry; dairy cattle were no stranger to Jan either. As a small child, he walked among the cows at home in the yard, until his parents made the switch from dairy to poultry twenty-five years ago. Jan’s parents started with a barn with 10,000 breeders.

Electro mechanics may have been Jan’s interest, but farm life was never out of sight. At Van Gils’ home, the three children were expected to help out, Jan recalls. After school, the Van Gils brothers and their sister were in the barn. Over the years, the number of chickens steadily increased and even doubled to 40,000 when a second barn was built in 2013.
Jan: “The new barn was fully automated. Looking ahead, we chose to extend and modernise the old barn. At the time, it was already clear that I would take over the poultry farm. The installation company had grown bigger. With more colleagues on assembly, I am now in the office a lot for planning and administration. This is easy to combine with the work on the poultry farm, especially now that the poultry houses are fully automated.”

The expansion to two barns and 40,000 breeders affected the planning of the poultry farm. Jan: “Vacancy time is too short. We often have to disinfect on Sundays so that veterinarians can take hygiene samples on Mondays. There is no external company willing to disinfect structurally on Sundays. So we started looking for a decent device that would allow us to disinfect our stables ourselves. Also to be independent of an external company and to be able to schedule disinfection without worries.”

Jan wants a solution that will last at least 10 years. His first purchase turned out to be a cat in the bag and quickly broke down. He continued his search and then ended up at Veugen Technology in Nederweert, Netherlands. Jan: “At Veugen they supply customised disinfection equipment, which is important to us. Also, my brother has a poultry farm and we wanted to use the device on both farms.” The Powerfogger 100 with two nozzles has been modified for the Van Gils brothers in a few areas. For example, the fogging device can be easily transported with a forklift truck.

“Our stables are 85 metres in length, but the Powerfogger can transport the fine mist up to 140 metres. Maybe too oversized, but this was a conscious decision. You don’t know what the future holds. Maybe we will extend our stables or take over a 120-metre poultry house and then our equipment will already be suitable for that,” Jan says, always looking to the future.

When using the Powerfogger, the entire barn is fogged within 2 to 3 hours. So Van Gils can easily disinfect both his stables within a day. He has now been using the device for 10 years. Recently, Veugen Technology carried out maintenance on the Powerfogger. Wearing parts have been replaced. Jan: “The fogger looks very good. There is nothing wrong with it. Now that some parts have been replaced, the fogging device can last at least 9 to 10 years again.” And after that, when the fogger is really written off? “Then I will immediately buy another one back,” Jan concludes.

Canadian companies embrace new fogging technology.

Canadian companies embrace new fogging technology.
The variety of companies that I visited in Ontario shows the full potential, and makes it fun.

Greenhouses with cucumbers 🥒 or tomatoes 🍅, farms with broilers, breeders, a hatchery🐔, a rutabaga vegetable storage and a paint factory. Meeting new and existing customers was a pleasure. Thanks to team Arbourdale, to guide and help customers with fogging and hygiëne.

Making crop protection last longer – New article on Hortidaily

Vegetable growers used to lag somewhat behind ornamental growers, but now, Jos Veugen of Veugen Technology is seeing an increase in the use of the Powerfogger among vegetable growers. There, too, crop protection treatments are increasingly being carried out with a fogger. That fits in perfectly with these times. Biological agents are increasingly used. Jos: “And you see that biological agents often use more water. And the Powerfogger is also good at that.”

The Powerfogger is electrically powered. There are also misting systems in crop protection that use a petrol engine. The big difference is that the electrically powered Powerfogger emits no heat nor burns petrol. Jos: “We hear that fewer and fewer customers want a combustion engine in the greenhouse because of the exhaust fumes. Also, many biological agents are temperature-sensitive. Despite the fact that we work with cooling nozzles, customers still think this affects the performance of the agents. So with the Powerfogger, that is solved.”

Labor-saving
Spraying is rarely the favorite activity of the greenhouse staff. Jos sees the labor-saving nature of the Powerfogger TB60D as a big advantage. So how does it work? Late afternoon, the Powerfogger is prepared and set up. You can set it at a particular height if necessary. Before the device starts doing its job, it ventilates for about half an hour.

Jos says that this helps the spread: “If the air is already moving before the agent is deployed, we see that the agent gets everywhere. The air is already moving then and it takes a while for the mist to settle. The post-ventilation leaves the effect for a while. The windows stay closed for as long as possible. But before people come in in the morning, the air has to be properly aired, of course.” In the morning, as soon as people come in, the equipment is then hosed down and rinsed clean. Ready for the next use.

Because the machine does the work and not the human, the result is more uniform. And therefore more reliable. The same amount of the active ingredient ends up everywhere. It is person-independent results.”
